What kind of changes takes place in our eyelids in time?

As age advances, also by the gravity effect, there may be sagging in eyebrows, in upper and lower eye lids, and along with this, increasing of volume of fat tissues in lower eyelids, and bagging along with herniation. Alongside this condition’s causing appearance defect, saggy upper eyelids may also prevent the vision of the person.

Who are suitable for this operation?

People, who are generally over 30 years of age, who have sagging and bagging in upper and lower eye lids, which have started to form, and who have no other health problem, are suitable for this operation.

What is blepharoplasty?

It is the operation of removing (surgical excision  of pouches under the lower eye lids) of excess skin and fat tissue at the lower and upper eye lid, which gives a tired and old expression to the person.

How is the operation applied?

The operation is applied in the form of extracting excess skin by performing a cut at the upper eyelid in a way to suit the natural eye fold. And in lower eye lid, by a cut performed right under the eye lashes, excess skin and fat tissue are removed. These procedures are performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (getting to sleep through the intravenous drugs). According to the complaint of the patient, only the upper or lower eye lids or both upper and lower lids may be operated at the same time. The procedure lasts about 1 – 1. 5 hours.

Is post-operative period difficult?

Early post-operative period is generally comfortable. There will be swelling and bruising around the eye. Feeling of dryness and burning in eyes may arise. Tears may increase, eyes may be uncomfortable in light, and in first days patient may not close his/her eyes fully. For reduction of bruising and swelling after the operation, ice compression is applied. Swelling and bruising will regress in 1-2 weeks. Mild color changes might be covered by make-up.

When does one return back to normal life?

It is possible to return home on the same day, hospitalization is not required. Sutures are removed 5-7 days after the operation. About in 6-7 months, cut traces in eyelid become unnoticeable at all. The person may return to work after 3 days. If he/she is using, he/she may use contact lenses after 2 weeks.

May repeating blepharoplasty operation be required?

The outcomes of this type of operations are permanent. However, the newly formed shape of the eyelids is affected by the reasons such as the life style of the person, weight gain and loss, stress, insomnia, and gravity, and it does not deform according to the person sometimes for a few years or for a lifetime. Following deformation, eye lids may be re-operated.
